The concrete structure, placed at the center of an intersection, fell on its side, smashing the van, parked beside it, to pieces around 4am.

A smaller statue of a tiger cub sat undisturbed ‘overlooking’ the incident.

Firefighters pulled out the driver, who was in his 30s, and took him to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), said Fire Service Control Room official Mohammad Ali.

The victim, still unidentified, was soon declared dead, said DMCH Police Outpost Inspector Mozammel Haque.

The van, a manually driven three-wheeler, was parked beside the sculptures, said Kalabagan Police OC Iqbal Hossain.

“But we don’t know if he was asleep or was just sheltering himself from the rain under the statues.”

Rainwater had weakened the sculpture’s base and that’s why it had collapsed under its own weight. The smaller statue is intact,” the OC said.
