PM Hasina pays last respects to Indian first lady Suvra Mukherjee

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has paid her last respects to India's first lady Suvra Mukherjee.

Her press secretary Ihsanul Karim said the Prime Minister visited the residence of Mukherjee 's son Abhijeet at 13 Talkotra Gardens in Delhi and laid floral wreaths at her coffin.  
 
Abhijeet is a Congress MP and is the eldest son of President Pranab Mukherjee and his deceased wife Suvra.
 
Suvra's roots are in Bangladesh where she spent her childhood in a village near Narhail.
 
She died on Tuesday at the age of 74.  Syvra was married to Pranab Mukopadhyay in 1957.
 
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reached the Indian capital to attend the funeral of the Indian first lady on Wednesday. 
 
A special Bangladesh Biman flight carrying her left the Shahjalal International Airport just after 6am on Wednesday.
 
The aircraft landed at new Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Airport around 7:50am local time. Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and the Bangladesh ambassador Syed Moazzam Ali received her at the airport.  
 
Her sister Sheikh Rehana, daughter Sayma Wazed, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad are accompanying the prime minister.
 
From the airport, Hasina went to the Rashtrapati Bhaban (presidential palace) and then to house of Avijit Mukherjee where the body was kept. President Pranab Mukherjee accompanied her.
 
She laid floral wreaths at the coffin of Suvra Mukherjee and later attended the funeral held at the Lodi Road crematorium in New Delhi.
 
She condoled members of the bereaved family and was around for 40 minutes.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, former Indian premier Manmohan Singh and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal were present at the crematorium.
 
Later Hasina met Modi at his Race Course residence.
 
She is expected to fly for Dhaka around 3pm.
