Traffic was stopped in the morning when the protests against the toll fees for plying on the bridge erupted.

Road traffic has resumed, though not yet fully normal, after the police intervened.

Police said they are diverting traffic through the second bridge over the river at Babubazar.

“Autorickshaw drivers are demonstrating on the bridge demanding scrapping of toll fees. We are trying to move them. Traffic has resumed in a limited manner,” said Shyampur police OC Abdur Razzak.

In May this year, a Tk 25 toll fee was imposed on those using the bridge, leading to protests by autorickshaw drivers last week.

On Saturday, they blocked the bridge demanding withdrawal of the toll fees. They are also protesting the government’s recent move banning all kinds of three-wheelers from plying on highways.
