Md Dulal Gazi, 50, was found dead in a first-floor room of the Eidgah Mosque around Thursday midnight, said Dhanmondi police Inspector Md Helal Uddin.

The man had been strangled, he said.

Dulal lived in a room on the ground floor. The room where his body was found was the resting room of the mosque’s Imam, Monwar Hossain.

Quoting Hossain, Helal Uddin on Friday said a mobile phone and Tk 2,000 were missing from the room.

An almirah in that room was found broken, but it had contained no valuables.

Police suspect a thief had broken into the room Thursday night. “It’s possible that the thief killed the caretaker when he went to check after hearing noises from that room,” Helal Uddin said.

The police officer, however, said other possibilities were also being explored.

Dulal’s body had been sent to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
