The monsoon depression will likely make landfall by Thursday afternoon in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Barisal, the Meteorological Department said in its forecast on Wednesday.

It said three to four feet high tides may inundate the low-lying areas.

For seaports, cautionary signal four implies that a storm, packing winds between 51-61 kph, is threatening the ports. But the situation is not intense enough to warrant extreme precautionary measures.

“We’ve issued cautionary signal 4 in the seaports,” meteorologist Abul Kalam Mallik told bdnews24.com.

Fishing boats and trawlers have been asked to return to safety.

Chittagong recorded 40mm rainfall on Wednesday but it was sunny in capital Dhaka where the maximum temperature rose to 35.3° Celsius.

Dhaka may see light to moderate rain or thunder showers with gusty or squally wind in the next 24 hours, the Met office said.

The sky will likely remain cloudy for some time.

Bangladesh will face South Africa in the second Test at Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

The rain-marred first Test in Chittagong ended in a draw.

The Met office said most parts of Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions and parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi and Sylhet divisions might see light to moderate rain in the next 24 hours.

Parts of Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong may record heavy to very heavy rainfall when the depression will be making landfall.

Chances of rain will get slimmer in the next few days, it added.
