The Met office has forecast it may rain heavily in some parts of Chittagong, Khulna and Barisal divisions due to the seasonal low in the Bay of Bengal.

The Meteorological Department on Sunday advised the maritime ports to keep hoisted local cautionary signal no. three.

Lower areas of Feni, Bandarban and Chittagong have been submerged by flash flood.

Water Development Board has forecast that the flood situation in Cox's Bazar, Feni, Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrhachharhi may worsen.

The board's Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre official Arifuzzaman Bhuyian told bdnews24.com on Sunday the situation in Sylhet might get better in the next 24 hours.

Senior meteorologist Hafizur Rahman said the hilly districts of Chittagong might see landslide due to heavy rains.

The heavy rains might continue for two more days, he added.

The highest rainfall of 299 millimetres on Sunday was recorded at Chittagong.

Life in the low-lying parts of the port city has been paralysed due to the flood. Unloading at the port has also been hampered.

A part of the Airport Road has been submerged, forcing passengers to use an alternative street to reach the airport.

Police stations in Bakalia and Patenga and several other police camps have gone underwater.

Bakalia Police Station Assistant Sub-Inspector Rupon Biswas and Patenga Police Station OC Md Alamgir said they were pumping out the water.

High waters that roiled in the morning started receding later. Bakalia, Patenga, EPZ, Cement Crossing and several other areas were underwater in the night.

The port’s Water Transport Cell acting director Mahbub Rashid said unloading of goods had been hampered for three days.

"No lighter ship was rented today (Sunday). Nine mother vessels are waiting at the outer anchorage," he said.

According to the weather forecast, the low over North Bay and adjoining Bangladesh coast has concentrated into a monsoon depression over the same area and is likely to intensify further.

Rainfall on Sunday was recorded 116mm in Cox's Bazar, 178mm in Kutubdia, 148mm in Teknaf, 117mm in Patuakhali's Khenpuparha and 42mm in Khulna.

In the forecast for Monday, the Met office said most parts of Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong Divisions, and many parts of Dhaka, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Sylhet might experience light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind.
