The party's regional leader Palash Malitha was shot dead during the exchange of fire at Mirpur Upazlia, police said.

Mirpur police OC Kazi Jalal Uddin claimed that the shooting erupted in the wee hours of Saturday when police moved to foil a robbery attempt on the Kushtia-Meherpur Highway.

“The extremists fired at the police patrol when it reached the area. The law enforcers retaliated. After the extremists retreated, Palash (Malitha) was found with bullet injuries,” said the police officer.

Malitha died while being taken to the local hospital, he said.

Police said they recovered a gun and three rounds of ammunitions from the spot.

Malitha was accused in four cases of murders along with several other cases of explosion and extortion with the Mirpur police, added OC Uddin.
