Jalalabad Police Station Inspector (investigation) Alamgir Hossain has been closed while sub-Inspectors Zakir Hossain and Aminul Islam have been suspended.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner Rahmat Ullah said Friday’s action followed an investigation into the allegations of negligence in starting the case over the murder and helping the accused flee.

A committee was formed on July 14 to investigate the allegations against the police officers.

Committee chief, SMP Additional Commissioner Rokan Uddin, submitted the report to Commissioner Kamrul Ahsan on Thursday night.

Commissioner Ahsan told bdnews24.com the process was underway to take departmental action against the three police officials.

After his Sylhet visit on Friday noon, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said those found guilty in the investigation would have to face ‘stern action’.

A video clip showing Rajan being tortured to death had caused nationwide outrage after it went viral on the internet.

He was thrashed at Sylhet’s Kumargaon on accusation of stealing a rickshaw van.

Twelve people have been arrested over the murder so far. They include Muhit Alam, who tried to dump the body, his wife Lipi Begum, witnesses Ajmat Ullah and Firoz Ali.

Seven of them have reportedly confessed to the crime in court.

One of the prime accused, Muhit’s brother Kamrul Islam, fled to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia after the incident but was apprehended there.

The government said he would be brought back to stand trial.
