Committee chief Professor Abu Bakar Siddique said these colleges could face action for this lapse.

Admission to Grade-XI, which began on June 29, will continue until July 26, though classes began on July 1.

A total of 1,933 institutions under the general, madrasa and technical education boards are eligible to enrol students for higher secondary education.

Education board officials said no student had taken admission in 72 institutions offering technical courses.

They said 14 colleges under the Dhaka board and six under Comilla were to find students seeking admission.

There was zero-admission also in 15 colleges under the Rajshahi board, 10 under Jessore, five of Sylhet, 16 of Dinajpur and one each of the Chittagong and Barishal boards.

No student had been is admitted to eight madrasas either.

Professor Siddique blamed the institutions’ quality of teaching for failing to attract students.

“But the students can get admission to the college of their choice, as there are more seats than candidates.”

He said action would be taken against colleges with zero enrolment after the matter was discussed with education minister Nurul Islam Nahid.

The minister told the press on Thursday that 200,000 seats in Grade XI were going vacant across Bangladesh.

This year, over 1.28 million students cleared the SSC and equivalent examinations.

Siddique also said no college had been able to enrol fake students this year, thanks to the newly introduced online admission system.

He said the colleges probably used to retain their government approval by furnishing false Grade-XI enrolment records.

For the past several years, colleges had been enrolling students on the basis of their SSC results.

This year, many students faced admission problems due to the new online admission system.
