He made the announcement on Thursday while talking to reporters on Dhaka-Mawa Highway in Munshiganj.

The minister said the rate of road mishaps had increased due to presence of Nosiman and Koriman (locally made human-haulers) and CNG-run auto-rickshaw on highways.

“Plying of these auto-rickshaws on highways will be stopped from Aug 1 to prevent road accidents,” he said.

Quader said police would be conducting drives on highways to keep such vehicles off.

The minister visited a spot on the Dhaka-Mawa Highway where a collision between a bus and a human-hauler on Wednesday left at least seven dead and 10 injured.

He said work would begin in December for developing the highway to a seven-lane one.
