RAB says they had been held on similar charges before and had hauled around 300,000 yaba pills in three consignments after being freed on bail.

RAB-7 commander Lt Col Mifta Uddin said, acting on a tip off, they had recovered the drugs from a pickup van on Wednesday night.

Arrested Jakir Hossain, 26, and Jasim Uddin Rana, 35, were in the vehicle.

Mifta Uddin said the two were associates of suspected yaba trafficking ring leader Jahidul Islam Alo.

Alo, Jakir and Rana were arrested on Dec 26 last year with 215,000 yaba pills and firearms. They were freed on bail about a month ago.

RAB’s Mifta Uddin said Tk 151,000 was seized from Jakir and Rana. They had made the money by selling the drug, he said.

He said Wednesday’s yaba consignment, worth around Tk 32 million, was destined for Gazipur.

The law enforcers were looking for Alo, he said.

According to the RAB, the elite force had seized over 2.5 million yaba tablets in raids in Chittagong this year.

Yaba has been a popular party drug in Bangladesh since early 2005.

Bangladesh and north-eastern India have become the destination for yaba tablets from Myanmar's infamous Golden Triangle, where even rebel armies, such as the United Wa State Army, has taken to manufacturing them in substantial quantities.
