‘Muggers’ kill tourist police in Cox’s Bazar

A tourist policeman has been stabbed to death when chasing suspected muggers in Cox’s Bazar.

The murder was reported on Thursday morning at the city’s Baharchharha roundabout playground area, said Zahirul Islam, assistant superintendent of Cox’s Bazar tourist police.
 
The victim Parvez Hossain, 22, was stabbed when he caught one of the muggers, Islam said.
 
He was rushed to the hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead.
 
Police detained Abu Taher, 28, and Abdul Malek, 24, of Ghonarpara area of the city.
 
Hospital's emergency unit doctor Nobel Kumar Barua said Hossain was stabbed eight times on his chest and abdomen.
 
He died of lung injury.
 
ASP Zahirul Islam said the group of muggers came by a taxi and robbed a number of tourists near the playground at Baharchaarha roundabout.
 
Police chased the robbers while they were fleeing, he said.
 
"A mugger indiscriminately stabbed Parvez as he grabbed another mugger."
 
He said police could nab two muggers while others escaped.
 
Police were trying to track down and detain other muggers, he said.
