He was the sixth of 11 people arrested over the murder to have given confessional statement in court.

Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate Anwarul Haque recorded the statement on Wednesday afternoon, Assistant Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police Abdul Ahad said.

The magistrate ordered him into jail after the recording of the statement ended at 5pm.

Locals caught and handed Muhit over to the police when he was trying to take away the body of Rajan after torturing him to death Sylhet’s Kumargaon on July 8.

The court granted police seven days to grill him on July 18 after a five-day remand.

Police produced him before court on Wednesday before the second phase of interrogation ended, as he agreed to give the confessional statement, police official Ahad said.

The assailants posted video of the brutal torture on a social networking site, triggering uproar.

Muhit’s brother Kamrul Islam fled to Saudi Arabia after the incident, but was caught in Jeddah. Interpol’s Bangladesh office has issued a red notice for Kamrul.

Nur Mia, who allegedly captured the torture on mobile phone, was also arrested.

Muhit’s wife Lip Begum is behind the bars now.

Statements of witnesses ‘Ajmat’ and ‘Firoz’ were recorded on July 14.
