Supporters of the slain Awami League leader Amzad Hossain, 35, went on the rampage at houses of Jamaat activists and leader Mozaffar Hossain at Raninagar Upazila’s Bohar after the murder on Sunday.

At least 12 people, including women, were injured when the Jamaat men fought back.

Raninagar Police Station Inspector Abdullah-Hil Zaman said Amzad and Mozaffar, superintendent of a local madrasa, had a longstanding dispute over possession of a plot of land.

Mozaffar and 20-25 of his associates attacked Amzad with sharp weapons when he went to cultivate the land on Sunday morning.

They cut off a leg of Amzad and tendons of the other. Seven to eight of Amzad’s followers were also injured when they tried to stop the Jamaat activists.

He died from profuse bleeding when he was being taken to the Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital, Inspector Zaman said.

Amzad’s supporters later vandalised and set fire to the houses of Mozaffar and several other Jamaat activists, he said.

Police, led by ASP KL Sarkar, brought the situation under control.

Amzad’s wife Fahima Begum filed a case over the murder.

Police detained Habibar Rahman, Bulu Ahmed, Inamul Haque and Shafikul Haque for their alleged link with the murder.
