Freedom fighter, agriculturist Zahirul Islam dies in Toronto

Freedom fighter and agriculturist Zahirul Islam has died in Canada losing a long battle with cancer at the age of 63.

He passed away at Toronto’s Baycrest hospital at 3:25pm on Sunday local time – 1:25am on Monday Bangladesh time.

The guerrilla warfare veteran was admitted to the hospital when his condition deteriorated earlier this week.

Born at Comilla’s Muradnagar on Aug 29, 1951, Islam took training in guerrilla warfare and fought against the Pakistani occupation under the Sector 2 in Dhaka and adjacent areas in 1971.

He wrote books ‘Ekattorer Guerrilla’ and ‘Muktijuddhe Major Haider O Tar Byiogantok Bidai’.

Islam, a scientist at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, also authored the book ‘Rice Pests of Bangladesh, Their Ecology and Management’.

The process to send his remains back to Bangladesh as per his wish was underway.
