Initiatives next week to extradite Rajan murder suspect Kamrul from Saudi Arabia

Bangladeshi officials in Saudi Arabia say they will start next week the repatriation process of Kamrul Islam, accused of beating Sylhet boy Samiul Alam Rajan to death.

Ambassador Golam Moshi on Sunday told bdnews24.com most government officers in Saudi Arabia would reopen on July 26 after a weeklong Eid vacation.

“We will initiate the repatriation process then,” he said.

Rajan, 13, was killed on July 8 for allegedly trying to steal a rickshaw van in Sylhet.

The killers captured the shocking torture on the mobile phone and circulated it on the internet, triggering public outrage.

The video showed accused Islam beating Rajan with a metal rod. The expatriate worker had fled to Riyadh the following day.

But the Bangladesh embassy, with the local police’s help, took Islam into custody on July 13, Ambassador Moshi told bdnews24.com.

He is currently in local police custody.

Inspector General of Police AKM Shahidul Hoque had said they would seek the Interpol’s assistance to bring him back.

Sylhet police have arrested 11 people over Rajan’s killing, including Islam’s brother Muhith Alam.

About Islam’s repatriation, Ambassador Moshi said the Saudi authorities were very helpful.

“They said they would provide all assistance to send Kamrul Islam back,” he added.
