Convict Nesarul Rahman Ovi, 28, is the son of Nesar Ahmed of South Middle Halishahar of the city.

The mobile court of Executive Magistrate Tahmilur Rahman handed down the punishment of the duration – equivalent to proverbial 10 months and 10 days of pregnancy in Bengali society – to ‘instill a sense of honour for women in him’.

“The girl’s usual lifestyle was hampered due to Ovi’s harassment,” Rahman said.

He said Ovi was a drug addict and sent to the Chittagong Central Jail after the verdict.

Rahman told bdnews24.com Ovi had been harassing the second-year HSC student of Zarina Mafzal City Corporation Degree College for a long time on her way to and from the college.

“The girl’s family decided to stop her education following the incident,” he said.

He said Ovi also threatened the family on Wednesday to pick her up.

The magistrate said locals held Ovi on Thursday after he went to her college.

Upon information, the mobile court went to the college with police and tried him.
