The development came a day after the former Barisal Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner was suspended over the incident.

“Zillur Rahman submitted two cheques of Tk 5 million to Deputy Commissioner (Sadar) Shoaib Ahmed on Thursday,” said Shaibal Kanti Chowdhury, Commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police.

The cheques contained Tk 2.5 million each in two accounts with BRAC Bank and Sonali Bank, said Ahmed.

A committee has been formed to return the money to those police officials who cleared the test for promotion, Chowdhury added.

An internal police investigation found that a Tk 7.7 million ‘fund’ was floated by collecting money from 230 policemen in Barisal who cleared the tests a year ago but were yet to be elevated.

Ten policemen were initially suspended over the incident in Barisal on Tuesday, followed by the suspension of BMP Deputy Commissioner (North) Rahman a day later.
