They will have ‘no problem’ proving MP Pinu Khan’s son guilty in court, says Dhaka Metropolitan Police Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam.

“The material evidence and testimonies we have clearly prove that the two people who died at Eskaton were hit by bullets fired from Bakhtiar Alam Rony’s pistol.”

“He admitted to the shooting but refused to confess under Section 164,” said the joint commissioner at a press conference on Wednesday.

Auto-rickshaw driver Yakub Ali and rickshaw-puller Abdul Hakim died in the indiscriminate firing on Apr 14.

Rony is accused of firing from a black Land Cruiser Prado while under the ‘influence of drugs’.

The vehicle is registered in his mother’s name, who is also general secretary of Mahila Awami League, the ruling party's women front.

He fired because he was irritated by a slight traffic snarl, the case’s investigating officer said.

The vehicle’s driver Imran Fakir, arrested with him, and two of Rony’s friends who were in the SUV with him have testified.

Police took Rony on remand for a third time on Tuesday after arresting him on May 31.

“He has been remanded three times for a total of 14 days. He will be sent to court if he wishes to confess,” said DB’s Islam.

“Not all cases get confessions (under Section 164). We’ll have no trouble proving his crime in court, because we have enough evidence including ballistic reports and witness testimonies.”

“It was Rony’s pistol and no one else had it. He has admitted to firing blank shots. But our investigation proves that Rony killed the two men at Eskaton,” said teh joint commissioner.
