Sub-Inspector Monsur Ali of Paltan Police Station claimed they opened fire to apprehend the ‘muggers’ at the UBL Crossing on the Topkhana Road on Monday night.

The dead has been identified as Md Shamim, 32. Another man, Md Abdul Karim, 30, shot on the hip, has been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

SI Ali said two muggers snatched Tk 100,000 from a businessman around 10pm in the area.

Locals chased the muggers as the victim shouted for help and police joined the pursuit.

“Police opened fire to catch them at one stage,” Ali said.

He claimed they had recovered the robbed money and apprehended the duo from the spot.

Shamim died at the hospital, he added.
