Eleven more killed in flash flood, landslides in Cox’s Bazar

At least another eleven people, including a mother and a daughter, have been killed in flash flood and landslide triggered by uninterrupted heavy rainfall in Cox’s Bazar.

Cox’s Bazar Acting Deputy Commissioner Anupam Saha said seven persons died in Teknaf, Ramu, Chakaria and Pekua Upazilas on Saturday taking the death toll to 19.
 
A mother and her daughter were killed in a landslide at Teknaf’s Baharchharha union.
 
Bodies of the two persons reported missing from Ramu’s Garzania on Friday were recovered.
 
Two people were killed in a flash flood at Chakaria’s Kakra and Koiyarbil while another died at Pekua.
 
 At least eight people were killed in flash floods and landslides in the district due to heavy rain since the early hours of Friday.
 
Five of them died at Ramu, two at the Saint Martin’s Island and the other at the Cox’s Bazar town.
 
In Bandarban, two siblings died of landslide on Friday.
 
Meanwhile, the water started receding from the vast swathe of submerged areas after the shower ebbed on Saturday after six days of non-stop pounding.
 
The road link between Cox’s Bazar and Teknaf and the Marine Drive still remained suspended for traffics.
 
Teknaf Police Station OC Ataur Rahman Khandker said Chhamuda Khatun, 45, and her daughter Shahena Akter, 15, of Shamlapur area under Baharchharha union died in landslide due to torrential rain.
 
Ramu’s Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Masud Hossain said the bodies of Kamrunnahar Begum, 22, and Tarika Hasnat, 9, were recovered on Saturday. He said 38 shelters were opened for the victims in the Upazila.
 
He added many of them started returning to their homes after the water receded.
 
Chakaria Police Station OC Pravash Chandra Dhar said locals recovered two dead bodies.
 
Kawachhain Rahim, 13, of Kakra union has been missing since Friday.
 
Body of a child—yet to be identified— was recovered from Koiyarbil.

Two people, including a child, in Chakaria Upazila’s Dulahajara Union died in the floods.

They have been identified as Mohammad Alam, 27, and Md Asif, 7, said Chakaria Circle’s Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Masud Hossain.

Meanwhile, two others in Chakaria Upazila was electrocuted after an electric poll was uprooted by the flash flood. They are Subarna Das, 30 and Kamal Uddin, 35, added the police official.

Pekua Upazila Chairman Shafayat Aziz Razu said a two-and-a-half-year child died after falling in the water from her mother’s lap on their way to shelter centre.
 
Cox’s Bazar’s Acting Deputy Commissioner Anupam Saha said the nonstop rain had inundated 90 percent areas of Chakaria, Pekua and Ramu upazilas.
 
Sadar Upazila’s 70 percent and 25 percent areas of Ukhyia and Teknaf Upazilas had been submerged, he added.
 
Heavy rainfall and onrush of upstream water had inundated over a hundred villages. At least 200,000 people had been marooned, he said.
 
The water level had receded by almost 18-inch after the rainfall reduced from Friday night.
 
He said eight control room were opened in as many Upazilas of the district.
 
The victims took shelter in 141 centres out of a total of 515 shelter centres.
 
The district administration distributed 145 metric tonnes of rice and Tk 1.1 million in cash among the victims, he said.
 
Eight medical teams were set up in coordination with the district’s health department.
 
Health department cancelled all leaves and vacations of doctors and nurses working in the district.
 
Anupam Saha said the district administration would provide a compensation of Tk 20,000 each to the families of the deceased by Sunday.
