Traffic snarls hit Dhaka on holiday due to rain, Eid shopping

Commuters in Dhaka faced traffic snarls on Saturday, a weekly holiday, due to water-logging following heavy rain.

The city saw mild downpour from morning after heavy rains in the past few days.
 
According to the police control room, water on streets at Shantinagar, Malibagh, Shantibagh, and Mirpur was receding slowly.
 
Traffic snarls were also reported from Bangla Motor, Panthapath, Gulshan, Mohakhali and Farmgate.
 
The Eid shopping spree on the holiday was cited as another cause of the traffic gridlocks.
 
It has been raining in Bangladesh for several days due to monsoon. The Met office has forecast that the rains and squally weather would continue until Sunday.
 
The met office recoded 67-millimetre rainfall in Dhaka in past 24 hours.
 
Highest rainfall on Saturday was recorded at Teknaf -- 213 millimetres from 6am to 12pm.
 
Meteorological Department Deputy Director SM Mahmudul Haque said the rain would start to decrease in the afternoon.
 
On Friday, at least 10 people died in Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban in windstorm, landslides and flash flood.
 
Thousands are stranded in flood in Chittagong, Barisal, Jhenaidah, Chandpur, Faridpur and several other areas.
 
The flood also damaged crops.
