Razzak’s wife Asma Begum gave birth to the third child of the couple on Sunday morning.

However, the family could not celebrate the birth of the boy.

Their concern for Razzak, who is now in the custody of Myanmar’s Border Guard Police (BGP), has overshadowed the happiness.

BGP abducted Razzak from Teknaf River on Wednesday morning after a skirmish.

Razzak, son of Tofazzal Hossain Tara Molla of Baliabarhi under Singrha Upazila of Natore, has been working in the border force for 21 years.

His first child Raqibul Islam is studying in the seventh grade and second one Faria Zahan Ritu is in the fourth grade.

Molla said both the newborn and the mother were in good health but the family could not celebrate the birth as they were concerned about Razzak.

“Our concern has overwhelmed our joy,” he said.

During a visit to the family on Sunday, this correspondent saw Razzak’s family members, including mother Bulbuli Begum and sister Taslima Khatun, were crying.

Bulbuli Begum was fainting intermittently while Razzak’s two children were sobbing.

Molla said he had last talked to Razzak on Monday. At that time he had said he would come home as soon as he could secure leave.

Molla said the family was concerned as BGB initially kept mum after Razzak was abducted and that the reports and photos published on newspapers compounded their worries.

He said BGB Commanding Officer had called him a day after the incident and told him that Razzak would come back after a flag meeting.

But now they were frustrated seeing no headway in securing his return, he added.

On Thursday, the foreign ministry summoned Myanmar Ambassador to Bangladesh Myo Myint Than and asked him to immediately return the abducted BGB member.

Teknaf-based BGB 42 Battalion chief Lt Col Abu Zar Al Zahid said the release had been delayed as Myanmar’s foreign ministry was yet to give any instruction to its border forces in this matter.
