Meteorologists said dark clouds would hover over Bangladesh from the beginning of the Bengali month of Asharh.

The temperature would drop with the rain but the humidity would leave people exhausted, they said.

According to the Bengali calendar, Tuesday is the 26th of the month of Jaishtha. Asharh starts after this month.

The southwest monsoon, which brings the rain, is now on the Chittagong coast.

Cox’s Bazaar, Kutubdia, Teknaf, Chittagong, Sandwip and Sylhet have already had rain, thanks to the approaching monsoon.

The highest 11-millimetre rainfall was recorded in Teknaf.

Mild to moderate heat wave is still sweeping across Faridpur, Madaripur, Chandpur, Syedpur, Barishal and Patuakhali districts, Khulna and Rajshahi divisions, and capital Dhaka.

On Monday, the highest temperature, 39.4° Celsius, was recorded in Jessore.

Dhaka recorded a high of 36° Celsius.

Senior Meteorologist Md Rasheduzzaman told bdnews24.com: “People may have to bear with the heat wave for another day or two.”

He said the monsoon had advanced into the Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.

“The monsoon may advance up to the central part of Bangladesh by Thursday. It will cause rainfall over a large area,” he said.

“The discomfort caused by the extreme heat will ease,” he said.

Referring to the weather data collected in the previous 24 hours, Resheduzzaman said on Tuesday that the humidity was 83 percent.

The forecast for Wednesday says temporary thundershower or rain, accompanied by lightning, is likely in several places in the Chittagong and Sylhet divisions and a few places in Rangpur, Dhaka and Barisal divisions.

Elsewhere in the country, the weather is likely to remain dry with a partly cloudy sky.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department Director Md Shah Alam said the southwest monsoon may extend to the entire country in the first half of the month of Asharh.

Heavy rain and mountain flash floods would inundate the northeast in the second half of the month, according to him.

He also said a monsoon low would occur in the Bay of Bengal in the month of Jaishtha.
