Meghalaya Police, however, did not ask the court during Wednesday’s hearing for permission to remand him in their custody.

Even the public prosecutor was conspicuous by his absence at the court of judge KML Nongbri.

The judge ordered the police to conduct Salahuddin's health check-up before taking him into judicial custody.

The BNP joint secretary general was brought to the court earlier in the day amidst tight security.

The former state minister was arrested at Shillong on May 11 by the Meghalaya police for illegally crossing the border into India.

Ahmed is suffering from heart and kidney complications. After arrest, the BNP leader was being treated in the hospital.

He was discharged on Tuesday from the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong.

Doctors at NEIGRIHMS described the Ahmed’s health condition as stable.

His wife, Hasina Ahmed, wants to take him to Singapore for treatment and says she is confident the Indian court would grant him bail on medical grounds.

She says they are worried that India might hand him over to Bangladesh considering the Interpol red notice on him.
