Acting Proctor Md Emdadul Haq said the incident took place near the main entrance of the university on Sunday night.

Rifat Adnan Papon, first-year student of Business Administration, had been suspended twice before for vandalising shops and beating up a foreign student on the campus.

Haq told bdnews24.com the girl was talking to her friend near the main entrance when Papon arrived there and began to harass her. At one point, he began to physically assault her.

Other students came to rescue the girl, said the proctor.

The victim immediately informed the Head of Economics Department Hasanuzzaman Shyamal and the Convener of the university's Centre for Prevention of Sexual Harassment and Repression Professor Yasmeen Haque.

The acting proctor said, “Right after the incident I telephoned the girl and promised her full security and asked her to file a written complaint.”

Once the written complaint was in, proper measures would be taken against the student, he added.
