Salahuddin may be produced in court on Monday

Meghalaya Police may produce BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed in a local court at 10 am on Monday.

The health condition of Ahmed, now under treatment at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong, is currently stated to be stable.

A source at NEIGRIHMS told bdnews24.com that senior state police officials are in regular touch with members of the medical board monitoring Ahmed's treatment at the institute.

After going through fresh reports on Salahuddin's health, the police have sought permission from the medical board to produce him in court.

Salahuddin's lawyer SP Mahanta told bdnews24.com that he has not received any information about police plans to produce him in court.

He, however, said that if doctors treating Ahmed allow it, the police may produce him in court.

But police is tight-lipped about the case.

A senior officer of the Meghalaya police said that delay in Ahmed's case, who is being charged with illegal trespass into India without valid documents, are creating problems for the police.

The police want to produce Ahmed in court and enquire thoroughly into how he managed to enter the country.

But they are hamstrung by his medical condition and all depends on the doctors at NEIGRIHMS.

If doctors give the permission, Ahmed will be immediately produced in court.

Medical tests are being conducted for Ahmed's heart and kidney-related ailments and he is under observation of several senior doctors.

An official source of the Meghalaya government said Salahuddin is seriously ill and he may get bail on medical grounds. The public prosecutor is also studying the case very seriously.

Hasina Ahmed, wife of the BNP leader, has already filed an application in the Shillong's Lower Court on Friday, the hearing for which has been scheduled on 29 May next.

In the bail application, Hasina has stated that her husband was  kidnapped from Dhaka. She has also submitted to the police reports related to the kidnapping as well as published news reports in the media to support her claim.

Hasina told the court that Sahauddin did not enter India with evil intentions.

Ahmed's passport and all documents relating to his earlier treatment in Singapore were also submitted to the court.
