Third year student Masud Al Mahadi and second year student Ali Ahsan Bhuiyan are undergoing treatments at the DU Medical Centre after the fracas on Tuesday night.

Shoumitra Dhar and ‘Arif’, responsible for the two separate incidents have been handed over to the police by the DU authorities.

Shoumitra Dhar claims himself to be a student of Daffodil University, but DU students say he used to stay in DU Hall under protection of Shanto Dhar, joint general secretary of Chhatra League’s Jagannath Hall unit.

‘Arif’, student of fourth year Linguistic department is also an aspiring Chhatra Leaguer.

On Tuesday night Masud Al Mahadi was beaten up at the canteen of Jagannath Hall’s dormitory, October Smriti Bhaban, when he went there for dinner with his mate Arshadul Haque.

According to Arshadul, two more men next to them were waiting to be served. As the canteen employee asked for the meal token, one of them ordered to bring the food but refused to show any token.

While they were still waiting, Masud told them that with token they could be served faster.

“Right that moment one of them said, ‘do you know who I am? Why should I have to give token?’”

Then he telephoned someone and moments later around 25 people rushed in and beat Masud up, said Arshad.

After being informed Provost Ashim Sarkar arrived and detained Shoumitra Dhar and ‘Anik’.

Later Shoumitra was handed over to the Shahbagh Police Station and the provost promised to take academic action against ‘Anik’.

DU Acting Proctor Amzad Ali said, “Steps will be taken after proper investigation.”

Chhatra League chief of Jagannath Hall unit Supriyo Kundu told the reporters that proper actions would be taken against those responsible for the fracas.

Meanwhile, around 11pm a student of Bijoy Ekattor Hall, Ali Ahsan was beaten up for protesting  ‘occupation' of a guest room’.

Sohel Tanvir, student of first year Mass Communication and Journalism, said Chhatra League Committee aspirant ‘Arif’ used to summon students every night to occupy the guest room of the dormitory.

Asked to do so, Sohel telephoned senior student Ahsan Ali and explained the situation.

When Ahsan went to protest, ‘Arif’s people beat him up.

Hall authority later handed ‘Arif’ over to the Shahbagh Police Station.

Provost of the Bijoy Ekattor Hall AK Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan said a three-member committee chaired by senior professor Robiul Haque would be formed to probe the situation.
