Newly-elected Dhaka and Chittagong mayors, following their installation, have renewed their pledges to make the capital free of traffic snarl-up and wastes, and end waterlogging in the port city.

Dhaka South Mayor Sayeed Khokon, North Mayor Annisul Huq and Chittagong mayor AJM Nasir Uddin were sworn in to the local government offices by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office on Wednesday.

“Dhaka residents have elected me with a massive amount of votes. They have more rights over me. If needed, I will give my life to honour that,” Khokon said in his reaction to journalists.

The Dhaka South mayor also said he would work on easing traffic congestions, repairing roads and managing waste.

He promised to devote his life serving people as did his father late Dhaka mayor Mohammad Hanif.

His Dhaka North counterpart, businessman Annisul Huq urged people to help him out with his tasks. “It is impossible for only a mayor to make any change. For that I want everyone’s help.”

He also pledged to make his area ‘liveable’ through long, short and mid-term development projects.

Huq thanked the prime minister, the Awami League and others for his win in the mayor race.

Chittagong Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin said his first priority would be to address the water-logging problem of the port city.

“A master plan was made for Chittagong in 1995 to end water-logging. The plan has not been executed, nor has it been scrapped. “

He said he expected ‘100 percent success’ in addressing the problem that has been ailing the city for so long through long-term plans.
