Gazipur Mayor MA Mannan remanded again over arson attack

A court has remanded Gazipur Mayor MA Mannan in police custody for a day for interrogation in a case over vandalism and arson of two vehicles.

Senior Judicial Magistrate of Gazipur Rehena Akter granted the remand on Wednesday.

Mannan, also an adviser to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, was earlier taken on remand for three days in two separate cases.

Gazipur court police’s Inspector Md Rabiul Islam said they pleaded for a seven-day remand in the case over vandalism and arson of a private car and a covered van on Nov 5 last year in the city.

The mayor’s lawyer Md Shahiduzzaman said he was earlier taken on a two-day remand over a Feb 12 arson attack on a bus and on one-day police custody in another bus arson case.

Mannan’s another lawyer Manjur Morshed Prince said the mayor was accused in six more cases filed with Joydebpur, Sreepur and Kaliakoir police stations.

He secured bail in three of the cases.

Mannan was arrested on Feb 11 at his Baridhara residence in Dhaka.

Panel mayor Asadur Rahman Kiron is running the city corporation affairs on his behalf.
