Hindu families leave village in Jhenaidah following threats by extortionists

Three Hindu families have fled their homes at Shailakupa Upazila in Jhenaidah following threats by extortionists.

Locals of Nadparha village confirmed that they left their houses in two phases.
 
No one could say where they had gone.
 
Police said they had heard about the matter but no compliant had yet been filed.
 
Sarutia Union Parishad Chairman Mahmudul Hasan Mamun and some neighbours, requesting anonymity, said brothers Samaren Mandal and Bipul Mandal sold 12 katha (18 decimal) of land around a month ago because they needed money.
 
A gang of criminals from neighbouring Aushia village had been demanding sums from them since then.
 

</div>  </p><p>They threatened the families almost daily and did drugs in their houses.<br> <br>They had also forbidden them to leave their houses.<br> <br>Neighbours said the two families fled at night on last Friday and their mother Nirmala Mandal had taken shelter in a neighbour’s house.<br> <br>Around a month ago, their neighbour Debendranath Biswas’s family had left following similar threats.<br> <br>Chairman Mamun said the three Hindu families could not complain to the police for fear of the criminals at Char Aushia and Aushia villages.<br> <br>Shailakupa Police Station OC Hashem Khan said he had heard the news on Tuesday but no one had filed any compliant.<br> <br>He said steps would be taken against the criminals and the families will be brought back.</p>
