‘Jewel’, 8, who hails from Sonamura  in India's Tripura state was handed over to his mother from the city police’s Victim Support Centre on Saturday.

Metropolitan police’s Additional Commissioner AKM Shahidur Rahman told the reporters, locals brought ‘Jewel’ to the Kotwali Police Station on Apr 24 when he was found roaming around.

Since then the Victim Support Centre has been trying to gather his name and address.

“After counselling the boy at the Victim Support Centre we came to know that he hails from Sonamura area in India. On contacting the Sonamura police we learned about his family.” said police personnel Shahidur.

Jewel’s mother, Shahena Khatun said ‘Jewel’ went to visit Comilla with his grand mother on Apr 23.  From there he went to Chittagong with another relative named Omar Faruk.

According to Omar Faruk, on the night of Apr 23 ‘Jewel’ went to visit his in-laws in Chittagong.

The next day he left the house to catch a glimpse of the campaign for the city polls and never came back.

They had been looking for ‘Jewel’ from then on, however, they did not inform the police.

The boy has been handed over to his mother but they will be sent back after the legal procedures are done, said Shahidur.

How did they come to Bangladesh from India is also being looked into, he said.
