The United Nations declared June 21 as ‘International Day of Yoga’ following an India-led resolution last year.

The High Commission on Wednesday announced two programmes as of the commemoration.

A comprehensive discourse on the scientific theory and practice of yoga will be held on Friday at Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, Gulshan, at 6:30pm.

The discourse will be followed by a guided practice and an interactive session with the audience on various aspects of yoga.

MN Kundu, Indian government’s resource person for human resource development through training, will conduct the event.

He is practicing higher form of yoga for the past three decades, and also writing on literary, cultural and spiritual topics in leading Indian newspapers.

Another seminar will be held at Bangabandhu National Stadium auditorium on Saturday at 10am.

Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, in association with Bangladesh Yoga Association and Bangladesh Martial Art Confederation will organise that seminar where three Yoga experts will address different aspects of yoga.

This will be followed by a brief demonstration of Asanas, yoga postures.

Yoga, originated in India but is now practiced across the world for health and cures.

When India submitted the resolution in the UN, 175 nations joined it as co-sponsors, the highest number ever for any resolution in the 193-member UN Genral Assembly.

The UN recognised that Yoga “provides a holistic approach to health and well-being” and thus, wider dissemination of information about its benefits would be beneficial for the health of the world population.

The main significance of an UN International Day is to focus the attention of all on the issue and encourage activities among the member states to commemorate the day.
