UK envoy visits polling centre in Dhaka

British High Commissioner Robert Gibson has visited a polling centre at Dhaka North City Corporation, and said the polling is so far free of violence.

He had earlier expressed concern over reports of violence during the campaigning.

The high commissioner visited Banani Bidyaniketan School and College and in a brief reaction told journalists that the presiding officer told him the polling was so far “very calm without any violence or disruption”.

Later he tweeted: “hope current calm atmosphere continues”.

Voters queued up in the morning as the voting began at 8am at Dhaka North, South, and Chittagong city, with six million voters registered to vote in the three corporations.

Diplomats, particularly of the European countries and the US, have said they will keep an eye on the elections.
