Court grants police 7 days to grill two suspected Ashulia bank robbers

A Dhaka court has granted police seven days to grill two men arrested for their suspected involvement in the Apr 21 bank robbery at Ashulia.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Qazi Shahidul Islam sent Babul Sardar and Mintu Prodhan into police custody for questioning after hearing a remand plea on Saturday.
 
The duo was arrested from Tongi’s Shatnagar area during a raid on Thursday night.
 
Court Police’s Prosecution Department Inspector Md Asaduzzaman told bdnews24.com that the case Investigation Officer Dipok Chandra Saha had presented them before the court and sought 10-day remand.
 
No lawyers represented the two suspected robbers during the hearing, he added.
 
A group of 8-10 robbers had attacked the Bangladesh Commerce Bank Ltd’s Ashulia branch with firearms, bombs and sharp weapons.
 
Six people including bank officials, customers and bystanders were killed during the robbery. A number of others were injured in the attack.
 
The locals fought back and caught two of the robbers when they fell off their motorcycle while fleeing the scene.
 
They lynched one of them and handed the other, Saiful Islam, over to police after a beating.  
The motorcycle was torched. Locals also managed to recover most of the stolen Tk 700,000.
 
One of the victims had died later that day at Savar’s Enam Medical College and Hospital. Another man succumbed to his gunshot and sharp weapon wounds on Friday evening.
 
Police suspect the aim of bank raid was not robbery but to create massive panic through killing and violence.
 
Police believe militants were involved.
 
Police on Tuesday night, armed with information gleaned from Saiful, picked up one Borhan Uddin.
 
Based on the information gathered from them, detectives nabbed Babul and Mintu on Thursday.
 
At a press briefing on Friday, police said they suspected the arrestees were operatives of banned Islamist outfit Jamaa'tul Mujahideen Bangladesh.
