Ban Ki-moon’s spokesperson at a regular press briefing in New York said the UN chief reiterated his appeal for “transparent, inclusive, and credible elections”.

And those would be only possible in a secure and safe environment for campaigning, the spokesperson said.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s motorcade came under repeated attacks during campaigning for her party-endorsed mayor candidates in Dhaka.

Her party blamed government supporters for the attack while Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina dubbed it as a mere ‘drama’ staged by her archrival.

Khaleda boycotted 2014 general elections but endorsed candidates for the Apr 28 city polls, ending more than three months of violent blockades.

The UN chief’s spokesperson at the briefing on Wednesday said he was asked a number of times about Bangladesh and reported attacks on the motorcade.

“We are aware that the responsible authorities are investigating the incidents,” the spokesperson said.
