The police are, however, yet to decide whether a case would be filed based on the complaint signed by Khaleda Zia’s Chief Security Coordinator Fazle Elahi Akbar.

BNP Joint Secretary General Mahbub Uddin Khokon submitted the complaint to the police station around 11am on Tuesday.

“More than 100 Awami League supporters attacked Khaleda Zia’s motorcade. They fired at her car and damaged other vehicles at the motorcade. Seven including the BNP Chairperson’s Personal Secretary Abdus Salam and her security personnel, were injured. We believe the attack was planned well ahead,” Khokon told reporters.

He said the police has received the complaint but didn’t lodge it. “The duty officer told us they would take proper steps once the OC comes in.”

Tejgaon police Sub Inspector Md Ramzan Ali told bdnews24.com, “We are going through the three-page complaint. Appropriate measures will be taken when the higher officials of the police station arrive.”

Former prime minister Khaleda came under attack at Karwan Bazar while canvassing for party-endorsed Dhaka North mayor aspirant Tabith Awal.

She escaped unharmed but vehicles in her motorcade were damaged.

Her security staff claimed bullets had been fired at Khaleda’s vehicle but it could not be verified independently.

Meanwhile, an Awami League leader has filed a case over the incident the same day accusing BNP activists.

The BNP said the attack “aimed at eliminating Khaleda” and blamed it on the Awami League. It called a daylong shutdown for Wednesday protesting against the attack.

Awami League chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina dubbed the whole episode as a “drama”.
