The senior BNP leader is yet to publicly campaign after failing to secure bails in several cases.

His wife Afroza Abbas, instead, has hit the campaign trail and on Monday revealed the manifesto at the National Press Club in Dhaka.

With a punch line of ‘Clean and safe Dhaka’, it promises to address issues like traffic congestion and public transport, healthcare, environment and waste management, public safety as well as urban planning and administration.

Abbas had served as a nominated mayor for almost three years in the early 90s. He had lost the 1993 city polls to Mohammad Hanif, the late father of his main rival this time, Sayeed Khokan.

“According to rules, the city corporation elections are non-partisan. But the reality is we are taking part in the polls in light of the party’s commitments and ideologies,” Afroza told the media briefing on Monday.
