During his campaign on Saturday, he demanded army deployment in the Apr 28 polls, echoing his party’s rhetoric.
“My opponents have continued attacking my supporters and implicating them in false cases being afraid at the public response I’ve generated,” Awal said.
“The harassment is not ending here. Now, my supporters are being arrested from processions,” he alleged.
Awal, son of BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo, campaigned at Gabtoli while his mother canvassed at Mirpur.
His party has been alleging harassment by police and accused the government of ‘influencing’ the Election Commission.
“There’s no level playing field,” Awal claimed. “I request the EC to deploy the army to ensure fair polls.”
However, the EC is yet to decide on calling out the men in uniform.
