Rafiqul Islam Rafi, also known as Moazzam and Nazrul, is accused in 29 cases filed over murder, robbery and the possession of firearms, police said.

Magura’s Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Sudarshan Kumar said the encounter took place on Saturday morning at the Sadar Upazila.

He said Rafi’s band blocked the Dhaka-Khulna Highway with a tree trunk and hurled bombs at a police patrol trying to clear the road.

“The robbers fled the scene when police fired back,” Kumar said. “Rafi was arrested from the spot with bullet wounds.

“Doctors at Magura Sadar Hospital declared him dead when he was taken there.”

Police said they recovered a locally-assembled gun, bullets, four improvised bombs and other sharp weapons.

“Rafi is the leader of an inter-district robber gang,” Kumar said. “He is accused in 29 cases at various police stations of Jessore, Khulna and Satkhira.”
