Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Sayem Hossain filed a petition with Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Thursday to take into cognisance the charges against Jahangir Alam.

After hearing the plea, judge Shahriar Mahmud Adnan ordered Shahbagh Police Station OC to register the complaint as FIR taking the approval of the home ministry.

In his plea, Sayem said BUET student Dipu Sarker posted a news item on the execution of Kamaruzzaman on Apr 11 on the page of Facebook group ‘Ari Pete Shona’ (overheard).

BUET civil engineering department teacher Jahangir replied, “joy ma kali, joy india” to a comment “joy bangla”.

He then edited his reply as “joy india, joy muscle power, joy politics”.

When asked to explain his stance by other members of the Facebook group, he wrote, “say joy bangladesh. nonpolitical. joy bangla represents two country.”

In another comment, he wrote, “wait and see. day by day you all are going to be worse than rajakars. injustice never be good.”

Sayem’s petition said such remarks were treasonous as per Section 124 (A) of the Bangladesh Penal Code and religious faith had been undermined by the remarks which were crime punishable under the Section 295 (A).

Students of the university formed a human chain on the campus on Wednesday demanding removal of Jahangir.

Jamaat leader Kamaruzzaman was executed for crimes against humanity he committed during the Liberation War in 1971.
