“It is a noble profession, that’s what I will tell our young generations. They can join this job and emerge as Florence Nightingale.”

She spoke about the appointment of the nurses while inaugurating the curriculum at Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Memorial KPJ Specialised Hospital and Nursing College in Gazipur on Wednesday.

Kampulan Perubatan Johor, a Malaysian medical group based in Kuala Lumpur, is in charge of the hospital built under public-private partnership scheme.

Hasina had inaugurated the hospital with her sister Sheikh Rehana and Malaysian Prime Minister Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak on Nov 18, 2013.

Inaugurating the curriculum of the nursing college on Wednesday, Hasina said, “We hope we’ll get highly educated, skilled nurses from here. They will also get the opportunity to work abroad.”

She said 10 best nurses of the institute will be sent to Malaysia.

She also said she will come to this hospital instead of going abroad for health issues.

“I don’t like to go abroad for medical issues. Why should we go abroad?”

The prime minister again underlined the importance of developing medical services in Bangladesh.

She spoke about a plan to promote the nursing college to a medical college by increasing the seats from 250 to 500 and said she was happy to inaugurate the course.

“Many may wonder why a prime minister would inaugurate a nursing college. But I respect this profession.”

“Patients get well by their care. It is a great profession. The objective of my coming here is to put more stress on this profession,” she said.

Hasina and Rehana, daughters of the nation’s founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, donated money and property they inherited to the memorial trust named after their father.
The hospital was built with the money of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Trust to offer health care to the workers of factories, especially of readymade garment, in Gazipur and Export Processing Zone.
The prime minister said an underpass would be built for safe commute of patients of the hospital.
Student of the first batch of the college, Sadia Farhana, delivered the welcome speech.
