EC Secretary Md Sirajul Islam told the press about the commission’s decision at his office on Monday, a day after the deadline for the submission of nomination papers expired.

The Election Commission will award poll symbols to the candidates in Dhaka North and South and Chittagong city corporations on Apr 10.

The secretary said the candidates could begin their election campaigns on Apr 8.

He said the election code of conduct prohibited the starting of campaigns more than 21 days before the polls.

A commission media statement said later on Monday night that candidates would be allowed to launch their campaigns before Apr 7.

Elections to the post of mayors and councillors in the three city corporations will be held on Apr 28.

A total of 1,833 candidates submitted nominations in the three corporations. They can withdraw their candidature by Apr 9.
