Say ‘no’ to militancy and terrorism: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged the people, on the occasion of Independence Day, to say ‘no’ to the militancy and terrorism.

At a seminar at Bangabandhu National Stadium on Thursday . she made a general appeal to the people to eschew violence, arson, militancy and terrorism.

 Since the beginning of the year, the country has been witnessing blockades called by the BNP-led 20-Party Alliance. Besides, the party is also enforcing shutdowns on weekdays since the commencement of SSC examinations.

Due to the shutdown, SSC exams are being held on weekends only.

More than 130 people have died in arson, firebombing and handmade-bomb attacks during the blockades.

Referring to the spell of violence, the prime minister said, “We could send textbooks to the students on the first day of the year. But since then students are not able to go to school or sit for their examinations on time, that was not possible.

“Those who are committing this heinous crime should not be forgiven,” she said.

Stating that terrorism and violence could not deter country’s prosperity, she said, “We want a prosperous country and a peaceful society. No one can stop us from prospering. Bangladesh is progressing and it will continue to do that.”

Referring to children and their perseverance, Hasina said, “You will earn laurels from across the world... that is what we aim to achieve.

“You must listen to your parents and teachers. One day one of you will become a prime minister,” said Hasina.

She wished that children and youths of Bangladesh would one day emerge victorious in any competition in any part of the world, she announced construction of a ‘mini stadium’ in every Upazila of the country.

Earlier, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque and District Commissioner Tofazzal Hossain Mia greeted the prime minister at the national stadium.

After that she hoisted the national flag and national anthem was played.

After taking salute from the parade commander, she inaugurated the programme by releasing pigeon and balloons.

Later she witnessed the parade.

After the parade, Bangabandhu’s historical 7th March speech was played on a big screen at the stadium.

After the prime minister’s speech, 46 institutions, including BNCC, Dhaka Sea Scout, Bharoteshwari Homes, Viqarunnisa School and College, Shahid Abdur Jabbar Ansar and VDP School and College, Bangladesh Female Academy, took part in the parade.

Earlier, Hasina went to Dhanmondi 32 Road and paid respect to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman placing flowers at his portrait after visiting the National Memorial.

She also released special stamps and envelope marking the Independence Day.
