Police arrest one over double murder at Dhaka’s Jatrabarhi

Police have arrested the maid’s brother for killing the wife of a former police officer and the maid in Jatrabarhi.

The accused Md Sayeed, 20, had been arrested from Shahjahanpur in Dhaka early on Thursday, said Jatrabarhi Police’s SI (Sub-Inspector) Imranul Islam.

According to the statement given by Islam, an argument developed between him and the owner of the house regarding a loan of Tk 10,000, which led to the murders.

On Tuesday night, police recovered the bodies of Rawshan Ara Begum, wife of a former police officer Abdul Kuddus and ‘Kalpana’, the maid of the house.

Abdul Kuddus died in 1994. Their children live abroad.

Following the murder, Rawshan Ara’s brother Moazzem Hossain has filed a case at the Jatrabarhi police station on Wednesday.

SI Imranul told bdnews24.com Sayeed used to visit the house regularly. He used to address Rawshan Ara as ‘grandma’.

On the day of the incident, Sayeed along with a friend ‘Parvez’ had gone to that house and asked for Tk 10,000 as loan.

Rawshan Ara refused to give the money and that led to an argument, said Sayeed.

“Rawshan Ara' s rebuking  got Sayeed angry and he took a knife from the table and slit her throat. Meantime Kalpana came in and witnessed the incident. Sayeed then took her to the next room and slit her throat as well,” said the SI.

Rawshan Ara and her maid ‘Kalpana’ lived in a three storeyed building near the highway at Kalapotti in Jatrabarhi.
