Oikya’s central committee member Atiqul Islam Atik on Tuesday said he expected Manna to win if the polls were fair.

Former Awami League leader Manna, charged with sedition and inciting the army, is currently behind bars.

He wanted to contend for the post of mayor of the Dhaka North City Corporation before his arrest.

Atik said: “The nomination will be sent to jail [to Manna] through his lawyer and will be submitted following the code.”

“Victory is inevitable if the polls are fair, we have the people’s support,” he said.

In a leaked telephone conversation, Manna, a former DUCSU VP, told BNP’s Sadeque Hossain Khoka to engineer clashes in Dhaka University to destabilise the government.

Speaking to another yet unidentified person, he expressed interest in playing a role in an extra-constitutional takeover.

Manna, who has been pushing for a political dialogue between the Awami League and the BNP, told Khoka that he wanted to make the Oikya the third most important party.

He was arrested for inciting the army and was remanded for 10 days. He was remanded for another 10 days in the sedition case.
