Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's first prime minister and also architect of its rapid rise from British military outpost to global trade and financial centre, died on Monday, aged 91.

Bangladesh’s President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sent separate messages on Monday, immediately after getting the news, to their counterparts.

Lee became Singapore's first prime minister in 1959 and held onto power for over three decades, overseeing the island's transformation from a port city battling crime and poverty into one of Asia's most prosperous nations.

The foreign minister in his condolence note wrote: “The example of his leadership and accomplishments will remain as a lasting legacy not only for the citizens of Singapore but also for the whole world”.

He also expressed his “deepest sympathy” for the members of the bereaved family.

“I pray to the Almighty to grant his family members and the people of Singapore enough strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” read the condolence note.
