“We don’t know where the Bangladeshis have been kept or how they are doing,” Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali said Thursday in reply to a question.

“No militant group has claimed responsibility for the incident,” he added.

According to media reports, the IS attacked Libya’s Al-Ghani oilfield in Sirte on Mar 9 and killed 11 guards.

They took nine people hostage including two Bangladeshis and others from the Czech Republic, Austria and the Philippines.

The abduction came to light after the security forces recaptured the oilfield.

Ali said foreign ministers of Austria and the Philippines had visited the spot and Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Libya Shahidul Islam had met them.

The abducted Bangladeshis are Helal Uddin, passport number B0156553, of Jamalpur, and Mohammad Anowar Hossain, passport number AE 3630754, of Noakhali.
Asked about the government’s initiatives to ensure safety of Bangladeshis in Libya, Expatriate Welfare Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain said, “Our message is loud and clear.
“We have asked the Bangladeshis there to monitor the situation and move to safe locations.”
He said they had given guidelines to follow in case the situation ‘went out of control’.
“They have been told to stock dry food and water sufficient for seven days. We have made arrangements to rescue them if the situation deteriorates,” the minister added.
