The ruling party leaders and activists were on their way to attend a party rally that was organised on Saturday afternoon at the Suhrawardy Udyan to mark the historic March 7.

The injured were admitted to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

The attack took place amid the transport blockade and shutdown enforced by the BNP and its allies across Bangladesh.

Quoting witnesses, DMCH police outpost Inspector Mozammel Haque told bdnews24.com that the bus after coming from Rampura was dropping the Awami League supporters at the intersection right beside the Ministry of Education.

At least five bombs went off when the passengers were getting off the bus, he added.

Prior to this attack, three crude bombs had also been exploded at Karwan Bazar in a bid to create panic minutes after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s convoy passed the area.

Hasina was on her way to attend the same rally.

A few days ago two bombs were exploded at a rally of the Awami League-led 14-Party alliance at the capital’s Hazaribagh.

Bomb blasts and arson attacks across Bangladesh have become frequent during the blockade that started from Jan 5 and shutdowns that the 20-Party alliance has been enforcing since the beginning of February.

More than 100 people have died in the past two months, mostly in fire-bombings. Several others have been injured.
