Driver ‘Shipon’, 35, and his helper ‘Shakil’, 14, were on their way to Sona Masjid Land Port to take delivery of goods, when they were attacked at Kansat around 5am on Tuesday, Shibganj police chief Moinul Islam said, quoting witnesses.

Shibganj Fire Service and locals doused the fire, rescued Shakil and sent him to the Shibganj Health Centre, but Shipon died on the spot, he said.

Medical Officer ‘Touhid’ said Shakil had suffered 80 percent burns.

He was taken to the Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition.

The BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami alliance has been enforcing the blockade since Jan 5, demanding snap polls under a neutral caretaker administration.

Nearly 100 people have been killed in violence during the blockade so far. Most of them were burnt alive in arson attacks on vehicles.
